PMHNP Programs in Jacksonville

To practice in Florida you need APRN licensure from the Florida Board of Nursing, which requires an active Florida or compact RN license, a graduate-level APRN program in your role and population focus, and national certification. For PMHNPs that is the ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Across the Lifespan) exam. Both Jacksonville programs are built to make you eligible for it.

Florida is classified restricted practice, and APRNs practice under a written protocol with a supervising physician. The state does offer a registered Autonomous APRN pathway, which requires at least 3,000 clinical practice hours under physician supervision within the preceding five years, and you will hear about it constantly from Florida nurse practitioners.

It is not a path into independent psychiatric practice. Florida law limits autonomous practice to primary care, and psychiatric-mental health is not primary care, so a psychiatric NP works under a physician protocol for as long as they practice in this state no matter how many hours they accumulate. The ownership split does the usual work here. The University of North Florida is public, so Florida residency is the single biggest lever on what its doctorate costs you. The two programs are also different lengths for different starting points, so a per-credit comparison between them was never going to be like for like. A BSN-to-DNP is a doctorate; a master's is shorter, which means fewer terms of tuition and an earlier start on earning and on accumulating Florida practice hours.

Then set the placement difference against the price difference, because that is the decision this metro actually presents. A school-arranged placement is a service, and its value is measured in the semester you do not lose hunting for a psychiatric preceptor while working. If it does not, a Florida resident is choosing between paying less and carrying a real scheduling risk. Ask both programs for a cost-of-attendance sheet for the specific track, and confirm whether clinical-course credits are billed at the same rate as didactic ones.

Jacksonville supports psychiatric rotations better than its size suggests. The metro carries multiple hospital systems, a large military and veterans health presence, and a community behavioral health sector spread across a geographically enormous city. For a student, that variety matters: inpatient psychiatry, outpatient medication management and substance use treatment are different training experiences, and a market with all three lets your clinical year cover more ground.

The military and veterans facilities deserve a specific mention for this specialty. Psychiatric care is a substantial part of what those systems deliver, and they are accustomed to hosting clinical training, which makes them a meaningful part of the preceptor supply in this metro in a way that is less true elsewhere in Florida.

We name employers only where we can point at a source, so this section stays short rather than listing every health system in the metro. The structural point is the protocol: in Florida your employer is also the party that supplies the supervising physician your psychiatric practice runs through, and because the autonomous route is closed to this specialty, that dependency does not expire.

Ask about it explicitly and early. Who would the supervising physician be, has the organization held a protocol with a psychiatric NP before, and what happens if that physician leaves?
