Best MSN PMHNP Programs
We have verified 89 accredited master's-level (MSN) PMHNP programs and ranked the 77 with confirmed supervised clinical hours. The MSN is the fastest accredited route to the PMHNP credential for a BSN-prepared RN, typically two to three years, and it qualifies you for the same ANCC PMHNP-BC certification as a doctoral program. Clinical rigor among the ranked programs ranges from the 500-hour ANCC floor (Wilkes University) up to 756 verified clinical hours at Simmons University. Cost, clinical hours, and GRE policy are compared below.
Accreditation — CCNE or ACEN
Pass/fail, not scored. We confirm current CCNE or ACEN accreditation directly against the accreditor’s own directory, the credential required for ANCC PMHNP-BC certification eligibility. A program that cannot clear this gate is excluded from the page entirely, not ranked lower.
Eligible programs are then scored on a 100-point rubric of factors we can verify for every school: clinical hours, cost, admissions flexibility, and format. See the full methodology.
How we verified and scored these MSN PMHNP programs
Accreditation is the gate, not a tiebreaker. Before a MSN PMHNP program appears here, we confirm its CCNE or ACEN status directly in the accreditor's own directory. That accreditation is what makes a graduate eligible to sit for the ANCC PMHNP-BC certification exam, which requires a minimum of 500 supervised clinical hours, so a program that cannot clear the gate is left off the page rather than ranked low.
Eligible MSN PMHNP programs are then scored out of 100 on four factors we can verify for every school: clinical training rigor (verified supervised clinical hours) carries the most weight, followed by affordability (total tuition or cost per credit), admissions flexibility (whether the GRE is required), and format (online, hybrid, or on campus, plus part-time availability). We do not score on certification exam pass rates, because ANCC does not publish PMHNP-BC results by school and inventing them would defeat the purpose. A program is scored only across the factors we could confirm for it; an unverified field is never counted as a zero. A program needs a verified clinical-hours figure to receive a numeric rank, so accredited programs missing that one number are held back rather than estimated into a position.
Ranked, accredited programs
Every program below awards an MSN with a PMHNP focus and clears the CCNE or ACEN accreditation gate. Each score is the sum of points earned out of 100; “Data” is the share of the rubric we could verify for that program. Unconfirmed factors earn no points, so a lower figure caps how high a program can score — it reflects what we’ve verified so far, not a judgment that the program is weaker.

What the verified numbers tell you
Across the 77 ranked programs, verified supervised clinical hours run from 500 (Wilkes University) to 1,170 (Florida International University Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences). Every one of them meets or exceeds the 500-hour floor ANCC requires for PMHNP-BC eligibility, so the spread reflects how much supervised practice a program builds in beyond the minimum, not whether it qualifies you to certify. On cost, the most affordable verified tuition is about $18,753 (Valdosta State University); programs at private and flagship research universities run well above that, which is why affordability is weighed against clinical rigor rather than treated as the whole story.
Of the ranked programs, 76 confirm that no GRE is required and 25 are delivered fully online. For context on what the credential pays back, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2024 median wage for nurse practitioners at $132,300, and projects employment growth of about 40% through 2034, far faster than the average occupation. Our PMHNP salary guide breaks pay down by state, experience, and practice model.
MSN or DNP: which PMHNP route fits you?
For clinical practice, the master's and the doctorate get you to the same place. An MSN with a PMHNP focus from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program qualifies you to sit for the ANCC PMHNP-BC exam, diagnose, and prescribe in every state, exactly as a DNP graduate can. The difference is scope of preparation and time. A DNP adds leadership, health policy, and quality-improvement training, and it is the route that matters if you want a faculty post, a system leadership role, or the terminal practice degree.
The trade-off is real: an MSN typically finishes in two to three years, while a doctoral route runs three to five and costs considerably more. If your goal is to practice and prescribe, the MSN reaches that goal faster and cheaper. If you are weighing the doctorate, compare the programs side by side on our DNP and BSN-to-DNP ranking, and see whether the pay difference justifies the extra years in our DNP-PMHNP salary guide.
How long an MSN PMHNP takes, and what it costs
Most MSN PMHNP programs run two to three years full-time, with part-time tracks built for working RNs that stretch the timeline further. Among the verified programs here, Vanderbilt lists the shortest full-time path at about 16 months, while several online options confirm 24-month tracks. The accelerated ranking isolates the fastest verified programs.
Cost varies more than length. The University of South Alabama is the most affordable verified option at roughly $26,730, Herzing University lists about $36,960, and Maryville University quotes $35,383, while private research universities run well above that on a per-credit basis. Because tuition swings so widely for the same credential, our rubric weighs affordability against clinical rigor rather than rewarding the cheapest program outright. Set any figure against the field: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2024 median nurse practitioner wage of $132,300, so even a higher-tuition MSN tends to pay back quickly once you are practicing.
Clinical hours: the number that separates MSN programs
Every accredited PMHNP program has to deliver at least 500 supervised clinical hours, the floor ANCC sets for certification eligibility. Where programs differ is how far above that floor they build. Among the ranked MSN programs, supervised hours run from 500 (Wilkes University) to 756 (Simmons University), with most landing between 540 and 660.
More structured supervised hours generally mean a more prepared graduate, which is why clinical training rigor carries the most weight in our score. When you compare two MSN programs, the clinical-hours figure is often more telling than the school's name: a program at 756 hours has built in roughly half again as much supervised practice as one at the 500-hour minimum. Pair that with how the program arranges placements, since a strong hours figure means little if you cannot secure a preceptor. Our guide to becoming a PMHNP covers the clinical phase in detail.
Three ways into an MSN PMHNP program
MSN PMHNP students do not all start from the same place, and your entry point changes the timeline. The common path is BSN-to-MSN: you hold a bachelor's in nursing and an active RN license, and you move straight into the two-to-three-year master's. That is the route most of the programs ranked here are built around.
If you are an RN with an associate degree or a diploma, some schools offer RN-to-MSN bridges that fold in the upper-division nursing coursework a BSN would have covered. It adds time, but it saves you from earning a separate degree first. And if you hold a bachelor's in another field but are not yet a nurse, a handful of direct-entry MSN programs take you from non-nurse to PMHNP, though those run longer and are less common. Match the program to where you stand today; each school's admission requirements, linked in the table, spell out which entry points it accepts. If you already hold a graduate nursing degree, an MSN is the slow way in, and a post-master's certificate is the route that credits what you have already earned.
