RN to PMHNP Without a BSN: Bridge Programs and Path

Yes, you can go from RN to PMHNP without a BSN. How ADN-to-MSN bridges work, which programs admit associate-degree nurses, and how long they take.

Yes, you can go from RN to PMHNP without a BSN. The route is an RN-to-MSN bridge: you enter with your associate degree (ADN) or hospital diploma, take bridge courses that cover the bachelor's-level content, then finish a psychiatric nurse practitioner master's. A few schools run the same idea as an RN-to-DNP. The 5 MSN bridges below take about 28 months to 3 years once you're admitted, and some of them hand you a BSN along the way. Then you sit the same board exam as everyone else.

You still need the graduate degree. What you can skip is earning a separate bachelor's first, which is where most of the extra years would have gone.

Key takeaways

  • The PMHNP board exam asks for a PMHNP master's, post-graduate certificate or DNP and an active RN license. It doesn't ask for a BSN.
  • The six accredited programs below admit ADN or diploma nurses with no bachelor's into a PMHNP track: five MSN bridges and one RN-to-DNP.
  • Plenty of programs called "RN to MSN" still want a bachelor's in another field. Read the admissions line, not the program name.
  • The median registered nurse earns $97,550. The median nurse practitioner earns $132,300 (BLS OEWS, May 2025).

Can You Go From RN to PMHNP Without a BSN?

You can, because the credential doesn't depend on a bachelor's. ANCC's eligibility rules for the PMHNP-BC certification ask for a current RN license and a PMHNP master's, post-graduate certificate or DNP from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program, with at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. There's no line about a BSN. Under the APRN Consensus Model, the graduate program and the national exam are what make you a nurse practitioner, and psychiatric-mental health is one of six population foci you can certify in.

The catch is admissions. Most PMHNP programs require a BSN to get in, so the question isn't really whether a PMHNP needs a bachelor's. It's whether you can find a program that will take you without one. That's what an RN to PMHNP bridge is.

How the RN to PMHNP Bridge Works

Every ADN to PMHNP program on this page follows roughly the same order. The names change from school to school, but the pieces don't.

  1. Bridge courses. These cover the ground a BSN adds on top of your ADN. Regis calls it 15 bridge credits plus a statistics course. Walden calls it 26 quarter credits of foundation courses.
  2. The graduate core. Advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology. These are the same courses BSN-entry students take.
  3. The PMHNP specialty. Psychiatric assessment, psychopharmacology and psychotherapy across the lifespan, plus supervised clinical hours with psychiatric patients.
  4. The board exam and your state license. You sit the ANCC exam, then apply to your state board of nursing for APRN licensure.

Some programs award a BSN partway through, once you've finished the bridge and a few graduate courses. Others don't, and you finish with an MSN and no bachelor's at all. Neither is wrong, but it matters more than it looks, and we'll come back to it.

RN to PMHNP Programs for ADN Nurses in 2026

Each of these programs admits a registered nurse with an associate degree or diploma and no bachelor's of any kind, and offers the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner specialty on that path. They're grouped by route rather than ranked, because the routes differ more than the schools do.

All six hold CCNE or ACEN accreditation, and all of them require in-person clinical hours. If you're comparing them against BSN-entry programs too, our ranking of MSN PMHNP programs scores the full field on the same rubric, and the DNP PMHNP programs ranking covers doctoral options like Allen's.

Watch for RN to MSN Programs That Still Need a Bachelor's

This is the mistake that costs people an application fee and a few weeks. Lots of schools advertise an "RN to MSN" or "bridge" option, and a good share of them are built for nurses who hold an ADN plus a bachelor's in something else, like biology or psychology. The bridge fills in the nursing content. It doesn't replace the degree.

The second version of the trap is a real ADN bridge that doesn't include psychiatry. Some schools let associate-degree nurses into an MSN, but only for nursing leadership, education or family practice. The PMHNP track on the same site requires a BSN.

So when you read a program page, skip the name and go to the admissions requirements. You're looking for a sentence that says an associate degree in nursing or a diploma is enough, and a list of specialties on that entry path that includes psychiatric-mental health. If either is missing, ask admissions before you apply.

Online ADN to PMHNP Programs: What "Online" Covers

Five of the six programs above deliver their coursework online, and Allen's is hybrid. But no PMHNP program is fully online, because the clinical hours can't be. You'll do them in person at clinics and hospitals with a preceptor, usually near where you live.

Read three things before you count on an online RN to PMHNP program:

  • Campus trips. Regis says none are required. Wilkes holds residencies in person. Allen brings you to Waterloo for skills exams and residency.
  • Where you live. Walden can't enroll Louisiana, New York, Oregon or Rhode Island residents into any NP specialty. Wilkes has to be authorized in your state, and Allen wants an Iowa or compact-state RN license.
  • Who finds your preceptors. This is the bottleneck in every NP program. Some schools place you, some help, and some leave it to you. Ask before you enroll.

For a wider view of distance options, including BSN-entry ones, see our ranking of the best online PMHNP programs.

Does an RN to PMHNP Program Give You a BSN?

It depends on the school, and the schools say so directly. Graceland's RN to BSN to MSN awards both degrees. Herzing's accelerated route and Wilkes's RN to MSN don't award a BSN at all. Wilkes puts it in writing that no pass-through BSN is granted.

Skipping the BSN saves time, so why would you want one? Three reasons:

  • If you stop partway. Life happens. If you leave a program that awards the BSN midway, you walk away with a bachelor's. If you leave one that doesn't, you walk away with credits.
  • Jobs that list a BSN. Some job postings ask for a BSN by name. If you're eyeing one, ask the employer whether an MSN without a BSN meets it.
  • Later doctoral study. If you might want a DNP or PhD down the road, check that the programs you have in mind admit MSN holders who don't hold a BSN.

If none of those apply, the no-BSN route is simply the faster one.

Is the ADN to PMHNP Route Worth It?

The pay gap is the main reason people make this move. The BLS May 2025 wage survey puts the median registered nurse at $97,550 a year and the median nurse practitioner at $132,300. That NP figure covers every specialty, not psychiatry alone, but it shows the size of the step up.

The costs are real too. You're looking at around three years of graduate study while most people keep working as RNs, plus hundreds of clinical hours that are hard to fit around a full-time schedule. Wilkes lists $38,637 in tuition for its PMHNP concentration before fees, and the other schools publish per-credit rates, shown on each card. Wilkes also wants a year of RN experience before NP clinicals start, so a brand-new ADN graduate may need time on the floor first.

If you're already an RN with a few years in, psychiatric or not, and you know you want to be a nurse practitioner, the bridge saves you the year or two a separate BSN would have taken.

RN to PMHNP Without a BSN, or BSN First?

The bridge isn't the only way. You could finish an RN-to-BSN program first and then apply to any PMHNP program in the country, which opens up far more schools, including most state universities. That's the route our guide on going from BSN to PMHNP walks through.

Choose the bridge if one of the programs above fits your state, schedule and budget, and you want the shortest line to the NP role. Choose BSN first if you want the widest choice of schools, an RN-to-BSN your employer will pay for, or a specific PMHNP program that only admits BSN holders.
